Supreme Court Allows Amendment in Sonam Wangchuk Detention Case

The Supreme Court has allowed Gitanjali Angmo, wife of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, to amend her petition challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). The decision came after the Union Government informed the Court that the grounds for Wangchuk’s detention had now been supplied, addressing the initial grievance that the reasons were not shared.

During the hearing, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Angmo, requested permission to revise the petition to include arguments against the newly disclosed detention grounds. A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria accepted the request and set the next hearing for October 29.

Sibal further sought permission for Wangchuk to exchange notes about his detention with his wife, ensuring proper legal communication. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the government, said there was no objection to this, provided it didn’t create new grounds for litigation.

Wangchuk, a well-known Ladakh-based environmentalist and education reformer, was detained on September 26 in Leh under the NSA and is currently held in Jodhpur Central Jail. His arrest sparked protests and public concern, especially among environmental groups, who have described his detention as an attempt to silence peaceful activism.

With the Supreme Court permitting the amended petition, the case will now move forward for detailed hearing later this month, when the legality of the detention and the reasons provided by the authorities will be examined more closely.
